Current volume: Ideengeschichte der BWL Band II
Edited by Wenzel Matiaske and Dieter Sadowski
About the book
In the recent past, business studies has not shown much interest in its own development in the history of ideas. There are various reasons for this, including the enormous growth of the discipline and its successful internationalisation, which left little time for retrospective self-assurance and room for the development of disciplinary independence in a multidisciplinary environment. However, forgetting one's own discipline not only leads to a discipline that frequently reinvents solutions to problems instead of building on existing approaches, but also harbours the danger of losing the constituent problems and questions.
In German-speaking business studies there has therefore been a renewed interest in recent years in bringing important contributions to the history of ideas in business studies and the roots of the discipline into the academic consciousness. This book makes an important contribution to this endeavour. It continues the discussion and focuses on the areas of production, operations research, innovation, marketing, finance, sustainability management, public management, non-profit management and international management.
The authors identify and discuss distinctive ideas and contributions to the development of the discipline. In addition to looking back, the current state of the discipline is also analysed. On this basis, the authors derive possible directions for further development.

About the Working Group
Ignorance of one's own history of ideas not only leads to a discipline reinventing solutions to problems rather than building on existing approaches, but also risks losing the constituent problems and questions. It could be hypothesised that the cumulative development of knowledge that mature disciplines seek also requires self-reflection on the history of ideas. These are good reasons to recognise the roots of theoretical thinking in business studies and to cultivate the history of ideas in the discipline.
After the conference "Ideengeschichte BWL III: Sektorlehren" at the Helmut Schmidt University/University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg in September 2023, the team is now working on the publication of the contributions by Springer Verlag. Springer has made its Meteor platform available for publication. This means that the revised and edited papers will be available online immediately, even before the entire volume has been compiled. The final publication (online and print) is planned for the end of 2024.
It is also the task of the working group to initiate and accompany a scientific historical analysis of the activities of the VHB.
The working group organises conferences and workshops at irregular intervals and represents business studies in the digitisation project of the German National Library of Economics (ZBW).
