Conflicts of interest refer to the notion that institutional or financial dependence can lead to a distortion of research results and must thus be disclosed. It is certainly not difficult to find examples of research funding being referred to explicitly in footnotes. What remains unclear, however, is, for example, how one should deal with indirect funding. Should reference also be made to the funding of other research work that one has done, which could lead to a “spillover” of conflicts of interest? What problems and viable solutions can be found in the context of private universities and funded chairs?
