System Dynamics Modeling of the Air Transport System

The Institute of Automotive Management and Industrial Production (AIP) represents longstanding competence in objectives of production and logistics. Our overall concept is the connection of scientific research with industrial practice. Thus, our interdisciplinary team concentrates on ambitious topics - in step with actual practice and often on-site with our partners from practice. To strengthen our team, we are looking for a research assistant (m/f/d). The entry date is as soon as possible, and the duration is initially limited until the end of 2022. The payment is made according to task assignment and fulfillment of personal requirements to salary group 13 TV-L. International applicants may have to successfully complete a visa process before hiring can take place. The position is basically part-time suitable, but should be 100% occupied.

The Cluster of Excellence SE²A - Sustainable and Energy Efficient Aviation is a DFGfunded interdisciplinary research center investigating technologies for a sustainable and eco-friendly air transport system. Scientists from engineering, economics, chemistry and biology are working on the reduction of drag, emissions and noise, life-cycle concepts for airframes, improvements in air traffic management and new technologies for energy storage and conversion. Technische Universität Braunschweig, the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Leibniz University Hannover (LUH), the Braunschweig University of Art (HBK) and the National Metrology Institute of Germany (PTB) have joined forces in this extraordinary scientific undertaking. The overall project is structured into the three core research areas “Assessment of the Air Transport System”, “Flight Physics and Vehicle Systems” and “Energy Storage & Conversion”. (

Shaping the necessary transition pathways to achieve sustainable air transport solutions requires a sound understanding of the behavior of the Air Transport System (ATS) itself. The task of the junior research group “Overall System Evaluation” is to analyze and evaluate alternative transition pathways in order to achieve long-term development goals for the ATS. The successful applicant will work with Dr. Imke Joormann to develop system dynamics and agent-based simulation models capturing the main actors and structure of the ATS, under consideration of technological, economic, environmental and social factors. The models will be used to analyze and evaluate the overall system behavior of the ATS for the selection and temporal allocation of measures meant to steer the ATS towards energy efficiency and sustainability. 


  • Completed scientific higher education (master, university diploma) in industrial engineering, technology-oriented management, business economics or a related field
  • Understanding of the air transport system and interest in its future development
  • Excellent analytical, organizational and communication skills
  • High level of proficiency in English (written and spoken)
  • First knowledge and experience in the area of simulation (preferably System Dynamics or Agent-based Simulation) and familiarity with simulation software (e.g., Vensim)
  • High motivation and pronounced interest in scientific work
  • Interest in working with partners from engineering and mathematics
