Business Research Conference: "Operations Management and Operations Research"

Report on the BuR Conference on ”Operations Management and Operations Research” from February 27 – 28, 2012 in Magdeburg/Germany

The conference was co-organized and co-hosted by the Chairs of Prof. Inderfurth (Production Management and Logistics, Magdeburg University) and Prof. Wäscher (Management Science, Magdeburg University). The conference venue was the Roncalli-Haus in Magdeburg. A large number of interested researchers could be addressed due to successful advertisement of the conference on the VHB and BuR webpages as well as the conference-own website ( and different distribution lists including the GOR (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Operations Research) mailing list. Within the deadline, 16 papers were submitted with 13 of them being accepted for presentation at the conference as they showed sufficient potential for possible publication in BuR.

One of the accepted papers was not presented at the conference due to illness resulting in 12 paper presentations plus two presentations of the key note speakers Grazia Speranza (University of Brescia, Italy) and Charles Corbett (UCLA, USA). For details of the program please see The presented research projects mainly focused on the fields of transportation and inventory management as well as reverse logistics and sustainability management. From a methodological perspective the contributions varied broadly including, among others, conceptual and empirical research. However, as it was expected, the majority of papers considered quantitative approaches in modeling and optimization of problems from the research fields named above. The key note speakers presented the state of the art of their own research and provided insights into promising new research areas.

The general framework allowed each speaker to present their work in a 30-minute talk with a 15-minute plenary discussion for questions and feedback afterwards. The concept worked exactly as planned. The time for discussion was always used up which was mainly supported by the participation of the key note speakers and the hosting Chairs’ members who previewed the papers and, thus, actively promoted the discussions. Noteworthy for the intensive and productive discussion atmosphere was the intensity with which one-on-one conversations were continued during session breaks. This was highly appreciated by the presenters. After the conference, the organizers and the key note speakers discussed each paper in more details in order to provide a written feedback to all presenters. Given this feedback, the authors had the opportunity to revise their papers before submitting it for peer review to BuR. Having a first impression from the conference contributions that have been submitted meanwhile, it is quite likely that several of these papers will successfully pass the review process. In any case, the acceptance rate is expected to be above the BuR average.

Another achievement due to the conference is clearly the fact that our BuR journal has received greater publicity in the community of OM/OR. The number of participants, namely 49, included many peers from different German universities and highly exceeded the number of presenters which contributed to the success of the conference.
