Taking on activities in academic administration at one’s own university and also at other institutions – VHB (!), German Council of Science and Humanities, Accreditation Agencies and so on, are without doubt time-consuming and often frustrating. It is tempting to turn down offers of such activities on the basis that one would rather “devote more time to research”. However, there are fairness issues in this respect. If we all behaved in this manner, our academic system would presumably rapidly collapse. What then constitutes appropriate engagement in the context of such communal activities?
