FAQ VHB Rating 2024

The VHB Publication Media Rating 2024 is a comprehensive, multi-dimensional quality assessment framework for major publication media in German-language business studies (BWL). It replaces the previous VHB-JOURQUAL3 (JQ3) published in 2015.

The primary aim is to highlight the differences in quality between different publication media. It helps early career researchers to navigate the diverse publication landscape and provides a comprehensive assessment of the quality of publication media relevant to the German-speaking world. It also provides an incentive for publication media to improve their quality assurance mechanisms.

The rating is divided into 18 areas, each representing a different field of business administration, corresponding to the Scientific Commissions. The heterogeneity of the field is recognized. Therefore, there is no single comprehensive overall list of publication media.

The scientific quality of the journals was assessed by all Scientific Commissions. In their ratings, some Commissions also refer to the practical relevance, the transfer contribution or the journal's relation to their own discipline.

The Scientific Commissions Business Taxation and Accounting have evaluated the quality of commentaries.
The Scientific Commission Wirtschaftsinformatik/Information Systems has evaluated the scientific quality of proceedings.

The assessment is based on a survey conducted at the beginning of 2024 among the voting members of the VHB's Scientific Commissions. A total of 1,175 people took part and evaluated 1,575 publication media. Each Scientific Commission used its own publication media catalogues and asked for the criteria that best met its needs. Some Scientific Commissions decided to evaluate journals jointly. In this case, the ratings shown are based on all feedback from the joint rating.

One joint rating assessing the scientific quality of journals brought together the Scientific Commissions Service Management, University Management, International Management, Logistics, Marketing, Sustainability Management, Public  Business Administration, Operations Research, Production Management, Strategic Management, Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and Wirtschaftsinformatik / Information Systems.

The other joint journal rating includes the Scientific Commissions Organization and Human Resource Management. They evaluated the "Scientific quality of journals with relevance for organisational, personnel and management research".
