Performance measurement in research and teaching. Experiences and lessons learned

Zeit: Donnerstag, 28. Mai 2015, 16.00 - 17.30 Uhr

Presenters: Monica Franco-Santos (Cranfield School of Management, UK), Gerhard Speckbacher (WU)

Abstract: Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are devoting increased attention and resources to the design, implementation and use of performance measurement and management systems. Some institutions seem to find performance improvements after investing considerable thought and effort into the way in which they manage their institutional performance. Others are discovering that their performance management approach may be generating unintended consequences.

In this session evidence was presented from (1) the analysis of 6 in-depth case studies in English Universities (3 Russell Group Universities and 3 post-1992 Universities), comprising 110 interviews with leaders, academics, professional managers, and support staff; (2) an on-line survey of 1065 staff working in 142 UK HEIs; (3) archival data from the participating HEIs extracted from the Higher Education Statistics Agency, and (4) survey data from academic staff in German speaking countries. The discussion focussed on different practices for performance management and accountability in research and teaching and their impact on individual level variables such as role ambiguity and job satisfaction.
